Please read the following carefully as it includes instructions on registration. To participate in Baby Dedication, membership at Fellowship Asheville is required of parents. If you aren’t a member, our next Discovery Lunch will be held Sept. 16. You can email Amy Hinch at email@example.com for more information on signing up for that class.
We’re excited for you and your child to participate in Baby Dedication! Some of you have taken part in this ceremony before and for some of you this is a new experience. We want to take few moments to talk about the purpose of Baby Dedication and what this means for your family.
Baby Dedication is less about dedicating the baby and more about the parents dedicating themselves to raising their child in a Gospel-centered home. It’s a public commitment you make before God, the church and your family to lead and spiritually nurture your child with the help of the Holy Spirit.
We can look to scripture for examples of Baby Dedication. First, we see Hannah. After years of praying for God to give her a child, Hannah gave birth to a son, Samuel. Upon his birth, Hannah prayed in Samuel 1:27-28, "For this boy I prayed, and the Lord has given me my petition which I asked of Him. So I have also dedicated him to the Lord; as long as he lives he is dedicated to the Lord.” (NASB).
Another example: After Jesus was born, Mary and Joseph took him to the temple and dedicated him (Luke 2).
Some people confuse Baby Dedication with Infant Baptism. Scripture tells us that baptism follows an individual’s decision to put their faith in Christ alone for salvation (Acts 2:41, 8:12 and 10:47–48). As a church, we believe in Believer’s Baptism, meaning that a person must be old enough to understand salvation and put their faith in Jesus Christ before they can be baptized. Therefore, Baby Dedication is an opportunity for you as parents to publicly declare that you want to raise your child to develop their own relationship with Christ.
In Deuteronomy 6:5-7, Moses gave some parenting advice. He said to, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates.” (ESV).
Dedicating yourself to raise your child to know and love Jesus can seem like an overwhelming task. However, we have God’s Word as a guide, and Fellowship Asheville is committed to walking this journey alongside you. You won’t do this perfectly and neither will we. However, we’re committed to teaching God’s Word in service, to teaching your kids about Jesus and to providing tools to use at home throughout the week.
In preparation for this event, please choose a life verse for your child. Let that verse be what drives your parenting, conversations and time together. Also, please email Andrea Burchett at firstname.lastname@example.org a photo of your child by September 21. We’ll share photos of all the children at the dedication.
To register for Baby Dedication, please click on the child below that you wish to register. If that child is not listed, click "Add a Person." Should you have any questions with the registration process, please contact Amy Hinch at email@example.com.
We are looking forward to the Baby Dedication and walking this journey with you. Thank you!
